Endangered species are those at risk of extinction due to factors like habitat loss, climate change, pollution, poaching and hunting.<\/p>

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains a global \u201cRed List\u201d of endangered and threatened species\u2014including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates.<\/p>

More than 27,000 species are currently threatened with extinction\u2014around 27% of all assessed species. Gorillas are among them.<\/p>

\ud83e\udded Why Do Endangered Species Matter?<\/h3>

Endangered species are vital to the health of our planet. Here\u2019s why:<\/p>

Gorillas are among the world\u2019s most endangered primates, each subspecies facing its own quiet crisis.<\/p>

Mountain gorillas number around 1,063 individuals and are listed as Endangered.<\/p>

The Eastern Lowland gorilla (Grauer\u2019s gorilla), found in the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is estimated at 3,800 to 8,000 individuals, also Endangered.<\/p>

The Western Lowland gorilla, though more numerous\u2014between 100,000 and 200,000\u2014has declined by over 60% in the past 25 years, and is now Critically Endangered.<\/p>

Most imperiled of all is the Cross River gorilla, with fewer than 300 individuals surviving in fragmented forests between Nigeria and Cameroon.<\/p>
