Hedgehogs need to travel up to 2km a night to find food and mates, often forcing them onto dangerous roads.<\/p><h3>3 Spiky Facts<\/h3><ul><li><p>\u200b<strong>The Big Eater:<\/strong> A single hedgehog can eat up to <strong>100 invertebrates<\/strong> (like beetles and caterpillars) in a single night.<\/p><\/li><li><p>\u200b<strong>Olympic Athletes:<\/strong> They might look round, but hedgehogs can travel up to <strong>2km in one night<\/strong> searching for food and mates.<\/p><\/li><li><p>\u200b<strong>Unique Armor:<\/strong> An adult hedgehog has between <strong>5,000 and 7,000 spines<\/strong>! They are made of keratin\u2014the same stuff as our hair and fingernails.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p><\/p><h3>3 Easy Ways To Help Them This Week<\/h3><ul><li><p>\u200b<strong>Hydration Station:<\/strong> Leave out a shallow dish of <strong>fresh water<\/strong>. Because Water Voles didn't evolve alongside them, they have very few natural defenses.<\/p><\/li><li><p>\u200b<strong>Loss of \"Wild\" Rivers:<\/strong> They need lush, ungrazed riverbanks to hide in. When riverbanks are \"cleaned up\" or mown, they lose their cover.<\/p><\/li><li><p>\u200b<strong>Pollution:<\/strong> Run-off from roads and farms into our waterways makes it hard for the vegetation they eat to survive.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p><\/p><h3>\u200b<strong>Water Vole Top Tip The \"Quiet Observer\"<\/strong><\/h3><p>Listen for the 'Plop': Water Voles are shy, but they aren't silent! If you hear a distinctive 'plop' into the water, sit still for five minutes.<\/p><p>They often resurface nearby to continue munching on reed stems.
